Not huge, but I'll take it!

I love spring. The weather is always beautiful; the lakes are always calm. The fishing is so productive that fish are practically jumping into the boat...Well, not quite, but a day on the water in questionable conditions beats a day on the couch watching some pro clean house on a lake you'll probably never get to fish.

Personally, I've had enough. I'm not going to wait around until the weather is perfect to get on the water. Take last week for example. I don't know if you remember what Wednesday was like, but I do...I still have the chills. The temperature was about 45, but with the windchill it felt closer to the upper 30s. Clouds were plentiful (which is a good thing) except when the wind is exceeding 15mph. The weather was cold and miserable even in the semi-sheltered coves of Elmer Lake. But all that doesn't matter, you know why?

We were catching fish, and even though I've only provided this one picture as proof I can assure you that this was a very good day of fishing. And it's a good thing too, because I put a lot of effort into getting ready for those few hours on the water. It was nice to test the drag on a few scaly beasts for the first time this season.

The day before I made sure the boat was legal (Woo-Hoo! Two trips to the DMV in one day!), had the battery tested and charged, changed the line on all my reels (or had someone else change it for me at the best tackle shop in South Jersey Blackwater Sports Center), and refilled my disorganized tackle box with all the stuff I lost last year.

The payoff for this intense preparation, a South Jersey Freshwater Grand Slam...Well, in my case, witnessing a South Jersey Freshwater Grand Slam.  What?  You've never heard of a South Jersey Freshwater Grand Slam...Well aside from the fact that I just made it up, you've obviously been missing out.  This fishing grand slam is achieved when you catch 5 of the most sought after gamefish in South Jersey in one day.  These fish, the Largemouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Black Crappie, Yellow Perch, Bluegill (not to be confused with minor sunfish) can be found in almost every lake and pond in our area.

You think it's easy huh?  Well then, why not give it a shot.  The first person that catches a South Jersey Grand Slam and emails me pictures of each catch with adequate proof that each fish was caught on the same day will get a prize from the fish head prize locker.

The Official Rules:

  1. Angler must catch the 5 following species: Largemouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Black or White Crappie, Yellow Perch, and Bluegill (Click here to download images of these fish from the NJ Freshwater Fishing Digest)
  2. All legal fishing methods are allowed.  NO CAST NETS!
  3. Pictures must be emailed to sjoutdoors@gmail.com for consideration.
  4. There must be proof in the picture that all fish were caught on the same day.
  5. The fish must be caught at a public lake or pond anywhere in South Jersey.  For the sake of this competition South Jersey is anywhere south of Ft. Dix.

Contest ends when we have a winner...Please obey all freshwater fishing regulations and be sure that you have your 2009 fishing license.  Be safe and considerate to those around you!  Now, go fishing!
